Thursday 20/11/08 - RAF Griffins Visit Beccles Airfield

Hi all,
A pair of 60(Reserve) Squadron Griffin HT.1 helicopters from the Defence Helicopter Flying School (DHFS) at RAF Shawbury visited Beccles Airfield this lunchtime at about 12:20. It was a "land away" on a navigational training exercise. The choppers involved were;

Griffin HT.1 ZJ239/R DHFS/60(R) Squadron c/sign SPECTRE 3
Griffin HT.1 ZJ708/K DHFS/60(R) Squadron c/sign SPECTRE 4

The call signs were heard on the radio and the allocation of call signs to aircraft was taken from SBS-1.

Saturday 8/11/08 - Lord Mayor's Parade, London
Hi all,
The fly-past for today's Lord Mayor's Parade in London over the Mansion House at 11:00Z did not take place because of reported poor weather in London and down the planned route. The aircraft which should have taken part, plus an airspare did get airborne but only got as far as the Southwold Hold before they decided not to go after a SATPHONE call to the C-17 from London. They then routed overhead Marham to Coningsby where the Typhoons landed and the C-17A turned for RTB Brize Norton.

Once again those who braved the wind and rain at Southwold saw a formation which those who it was intended for did not !!

The aircraft involved are noted below and I thank Terry "Triplex" for the details of the Coningsby aircraft.

C-17A Globemaster III ZZ175 99 Squadron c/s ASCOT 888/GLOBEMASTER/TYPHOON COMBINE (Should have changed to MANSION FORMATION but this didn't happen as the cancellation order came through before the change took place).

Typhoon F.2 ZJ927/QO-M 3 Squadron c/s TYPHOON 1
Typhoon F.2 ZJ922/QO-C 3 Squadron c/s TYPHOON 2
Typhoon T.1 ZJ803/BA 29(R) Squadron c/s TYPHOON 5 (airspare)

Other 'spares' which remained on the ground at Coningsby were:
Typhoon T.1 ZJ811/DZ XI(F) Squadron c/s TYPHOON 3 remained on the ASP.
Typhoon F/T.? ZJ??? c/s TYPHOON 4 remained in the HAS crewed out.

Agusta A.109E ZR321 32 Squadron c/s MANSION WEATHER CHECK.
If the flypast had gone ahead the A.109E would have changed callsign to MANSION PHOTO, but it was not to be. It was noted in comms with THAMES RADAR, and this was probably the location of the SATPHONE in London.

Tuesday 4/11/08 - Designation For RAF RC-135W Rivet Joint Emerges

A new piece of information has emerged about the RAF receiving three RC-135W RIVET JOINT aircraft for service with 51 Squadron at RAF Waddington. If these aircraft are purchased rather than leased they will be designated Sentry R.2 in RAF service.
(It is not clear which option the MoD will take yet - expect an announcement during the parliamentary recess at Christmas !!! To discourage debate ???? Can't believe our Government would do that !!).

If a lease deal is chosen, then I understand that the aircraft will retain their USAF designation in UK service, rather like the RAF C-17A Globemasters did.
My understanding is that three KC-135R Stratotankers have now been selected for conversion to RC-135W config. However, there are some sources suggesting that one of the current RC-135V's will be upgraded to RC-135W standard and only two KC-135R's to be converted - this being allegedly to save time to service entry. That being said, my sources which have been accurate in the past, are still saying that the three KC-135R conversion option is the one that will happen.

It is still not clear which three KC-135R Stratotankers have been selected by the UK MoD/RAF - the serials must come out shortly if an announcement is to be made in late December.

Monday 25/8/08 - Reds Into Norwich

TThe Red Arrows arrived at Norwich Airport on the 20th August with ten Hawk T.1's as listed below;

Hawk T.1W XX179 Red Arrows (RAFAT)
Hawk T.1A XX227 Red Arrows (RAFAT)
Hawk T.1 XX233 Red Arrows (RAFAT)
Hawk T.1 XX237 Red Arrows (RAFAT)
Hawk T.1A XX253 Red Arrows (RAFAT)
Hawk T.1A XX264 Red Arrows (RAFAT)
Hawk T.1A XX266 Red Arrows (RAFAT)
Hawk T.1 XX292 Red Arrows (RAFAT)
Hawk T.1A XX306 Red Arrows (RAFAT)
Hawk T.1 XX308 Red Arrows (RAFAT)

In addition the Team Manager (RED 10) was picked up from a hotel just outside Norwich by a Squirrel HT.1 ZJ265/65 from DHFS until it arrived at the hotel it was using the callsign SHAWBURY 09 but on departure from that location it had changed to RED 10 the Reds performed at the Cromer Airshow then nightstopped at Norwich to perform in the Clacton Airshow on the 21st August returning to Norwich for a refuel before heading off to Exeter for a display there.

On the 22nd August they were back at Norwich again to perform on day two at Clacton before returning to refuel and head off to Blackpool. Hawk T.1 XX237 went 'tech' and was still at Norwich on the 23rd August.

Another of the Red Arrows Hawks had a bird strike on the way back from Exeter and diverted as a precaution into RAF Wittering. It is not clear if after inspection it got airborne again or whether there was damage sustained and it could not carry on.

The DHFS Squirrel HT.1 with RED 10 was buzzing around all over the place and I do not have a complete breakdown of it's movements, only to say that it was the same Squirrel reported at most of the locations where the 'Reds' performed over the weekend.

Wednesday 12/8/08 - Spirits of Fairford!

The two B-2 Spirit "Stealth Bombers" turned-up at RAF Fairford last night (Mon 11/8) from Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri, around midnight as planned. They had dropped practice munitions on the RAF Holbeach/Wainfleet ranges before dropping into Fairford. They are due to fly a 'daytime' mission on Wednesday which will mean another visit to The Wash ranges.

The two aircraft involved are;

B-2 Spirit 82-1067/WM 'Spirit of Arizona' 509th Bomb Wing, callsign REAPER 11 (Flown by a RAF Exchange pilot)
B-2 Spirit 89-0128/WM 'Spirit of Nebraska' 509th Bomb Wing callsign REAPER 12

Monday 4/8/08 - Turkish Air Force into Mildenhall

The latest info I have is that the Turkish Air Force (THK) KC-135R's and F-16's were due into Mildenhall at 18:00 this evening (Not sure if that's Local or Zulu !!) on their way back from Red Flag.

According to the flight plan the serials are:
KC-135R's = 72609, 80110 & 23563
F-16's = 10024, 90031, 10012, 90026, 10008 & 80036

If this is the case then there has been some sort of changeover of two of the F-16's as two of them were not the ones that passed through on their way to the USA. Flight Plans are often misleading or have errors so we'll have to wait and see what actual F-16's turn up.
I understand that they will overnight at 'The Hall' before heading for home tomorrow. Sorry no times yet. Rumours have it as 08:00 and 10:00, so take your pick.

Sunday 13/7/08 - Turkish F-16's into Mildenhall

Six Turkish Air Force (TuAF) F-16's went into Mildenhall today having passed over the south Lowestoft area en-route from NAVPI to 'The Hall', they were escorted in pairs by their respective KC-135R Stratotankers. Clearly visible over Lowestoft in a small patch of blue sky was the C-130E Hercules painted in the colours of the "Turkish Stars" aerobatic display team. The Turkish Stars are currently at RAF Fairford supported by a C-160D Transall also painted in their Red & White scheme.
The list below gives the order in which these TuAF aircraft passed over Lowestoft. The Saudi Arabian Air Force E-3A Sentries came in from the west but may head out from Mildenhall to NAVPI tomorrow, passing over the Lowestoft area.
I have been told by a usually reliable source that the Turks should depart RAF Mildenhall between 10:00 and 10:30 local time tomorrow morning (Monday).

F-16D 91-0024 141 'Wolf' Filo c/sign TAF 028
F-16C 89-0023 141 'Wolf' Filo c/sign TAF 029

KC-135R Stratotanker 62-3539 101 'Asena' Filo c/sign TAF 033

Also arriving today at an interestingly busy Mildenhall were two Saudi Arabian Air Force E-3A Sentry (AWACS) aircraft;

E-3A Sentry 1802 18 Sqn/6 Wing RSAF c/sign ????
E-3A Sentry 1804 18 Sqn/6 Wing RSAF c/sign ????

They appear to be heading home as they came in from the USA.

Monday 07/7/08 - Waddington Vulcan Woes

You guys that went to Waddington on the Saturday were fortunate to enjoy the Vulcan airborne. She went tech on Sunday with an alternator switch problem and was unable to fly. They have plenty of spares back at Bruntingthorpe and were offered a heli trip to fetch them, but with an estimated 2 hour repair job the chances of getting her airborne in time for the display were remote.
So Sundays crowd just had the treat of an impressive fast taxi run just lifting the nose wheel off the tarmac in a cloud of spray from the wet runway.

Monday 30/6/08 - Louisiana ANG F-15s, the Return pt.2

The first six of the 'JZ' coded F-15A/C Eagles of the Louisiana Air National Guard went up the North Sea yesterday (Sunday) with their accompanying tankers on their way home to the USA. We were expecting the other four F-15A/C Eagles to do the same today. However, this was not to be the case and they turned up at RAF Lakenheath around lunchtime today!!

Nobody seems to have any idea when they may leave for the USA, some think they may not go home until the weekend. The four were;

F-15A Eagle 75-0075/JZ 122 FS/159 FW HURON 71
F-15A Eagle 76-0113/JZ 122 FS/159 FW HURON 74
F-15A Eagle 77-0062/JZ 122 FS/159 FW HURON 72

Friday 27/6/08 - Louisiana ANG F-15s, the Return

My latest information is that the ten F-15C's from the Louisiana ANG currently on exercise in Hungary are not coming back through RAF Lakenheath on their way back home to the USA. It would now appear that they will come back through UK airspace sometime around lunchtime on Saturday. Routing from Dutch airspace to NAVPI to overhead Marham and then off in the direction of either Lands End or Manchester with their accompanying tankers, which flew into Hungary today. If the weather is fine we should see them as they route NAVPI to overhead Marham at about 24,000 feet. This should mean that they will cross the UK coastline heading west between Corton and Hopton.

Tuesday 24/6/08 - LAS Visit, Flixton Airfield, Thursday 26/6

Just a polite reminder to let you know the visit to Flixton Airfield is on Thursday 26th June. Can I point out that this is NOT a visit to the Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum, it is a visit to the 'old' Flixton Aerodrome, some of which still remains today. Meeting point is the Flixton Buck public house at 19:00 to move up to the Flixton airfield when everyone has arrived. This is an unusual opportunity, so please get along and support Austin Mobbs who has put this trip together. Weather forecast looks good and there will be plenty of light until about 21:30 for pictures etc. if the forecast is good.

Don't miss this opportunity - be there!!

Monday 16/6/08 - *Rumour Control* - F-22s to Lakenheath?

There are some rumours circulating (but amongst some people who are usually not too far of the mark) that there will be either 4 or 6 F-22A Raptors coming to the UK so that two aircraft can participate at RIAT and Farnborough. The story goes that they may 'lodge' at Lakenheath. Has anyone got any firm news on this ????

Thursday 12/6/08 - QBF Frequencies

Here is a list of frequencies heard in use during the Queen's Birthday Fly-Past rehearsal. I don't claim them to be the only frequencies used, only the ones I picked anything up on. Hopefully they will use some or all of these frequencies again on Saturday for the 'actual'. They should talk to Wattisham, Southend and Thames/City Radar on the way down from Southwold. If the weather is too bad for the full flypast then it will be reduced to the BBMF plus the 9 Typhoons. If it's really bad then it will be just the Typhoons and if it's even worse they'll cancel !!

Wednesday 11/6/08 - QBF Practice

Today’s QBF practice took everybody at Southwold by surprise to say the least!
Whereas in previous years the race-track has been “at right-angles” to the beach, today’s was 5 miles out to sea at the closest, so we saw nothing near until the final join-up as the whole formation headed inland. To say the least, the formation keeping was ragged – hopefully better by Marham and a whole lot better at Waddo.
Stars were the 16 GR4’s whose diamond was spot on over Southwold.

A long wait for 2 minutes of high-flying, loose formatting – so beware if you go Thursday/Friday – expect nowt until they turn inland for datum. Saturday? Who knows? As they are heading south-ish they may do it different.
The crowd will miss the Reds – they should be there, the crowd will expect!

Tuesday 10/6/08 - F-15s to Lakenheath

From several usually fairly reliable sources, one of them in the USA. There are said to be either 8 or 10 F-15 Eagles or Strike Eagles deploying to RAF Lakenheath this evening (Tuesday). Some sources suggest that these aircraft will be "AK's" from Alaska, USA. Another source suggests they will be ANG aircraft. Time will tell I guess. I am told they are due to arrive between 16:00 and 19:00. I don't know if this is 'local' or 'Zulu'. Fighter Control e-group are suggesting Wednesday and not Tuesday for the arrival.

I have spoken to 'official' sources at Lakenheath this morning and was offered a very courteous and polite "No comment, Sir".

Mon 26/5/08 - LAS Diary Update & Southend Airshow

Richard (Reeve) has been busy keeping me in the picture of our programme for June 2008, here's the details;

The LAS activities programme for June 2008 is as follows:
June 12th Flying Evening at SEETHING (Back-up date June 19th), from 17:00 onwards
June 14th Queen's Birthday Flypast (Bigger this year due to RAF 90th Anniversary) Car Park, Walberswick
June 19th Back-up flying evening at SEETHING in case of poor weather on 12th June. If 12th June goes ahead this will be cancelled
June 26th Walk Over Flixton Airfield - Meet at Flixton Buck Pub at 19:00
I'll try and get details of the Queen's Birthday Fly-Past actual and rehearsal out to you all as soon as we can get our hands on a copy of the Airspace Coordination Notice (ACN). As far as I am aware it will be the usual 'Southwold Hold' join up, with RAF Marham playing the part of Buckingham Palace on the rehearsal.

Don't forget to book your place on the RAF Waddington Air Show trip. Ron (Ashby) needs to get bookings in for reduced price tickets, so let him know and get your money to him ASAP. The line-up for the show is looking good and they have a very good website at; www.waddingtonairshow.co.uk where you can see all the listings for both the flying and static displays. The site is updated on a regular basis.

Also, In addition to the registrations of some of the participants and spares for the Southend Air Show which were noted at Southend Airport on Sunday some extra details have now been gained. The Hawks used the radio callsign MUSTANG, the Tucano's were using SWORD, an 'old' Linton-on-Ouse/1 Flying Training School (1 FTS) callsign dating back to Jet Provost days at least. The B-25J Mitchell marked as 232511 has the US civil registration N320SQ although it is based in the Netherlands with the Duke of Brabant's Air Force. It has other identities; 44-29507 it's original US Military serial and RNeth AF serial NF-149 which is also currently carried although it was never worn by this aircraft in the past.

Later in the evening the following aircraft were noted;
PBY-5A Catalina (Canso ?) 433915/G-PBYA - Plane Sailing from Duxford.
Hercules C.3 XV290/290 LTW c/s RAFAIR 600 (RAF Falcons Parachute Display Team Support).
Hopefully they had some decent weather at Southend today, although the weather in Colchester was 'awful' !!
